  • Dough Babies
Recipe contributed by my mother-in-law Angie Perin
    Ingredients
    • 1/4 cup lukewarm water
    • 1/2 cup sugar plus 1 additional teaspoon of sugar
    • 1 package of yeast
    • 1 cup scalded milk
    • 1/3 cup margarine
    • 2 eggs, beaten
    • Dash of salt
    • 3 1/2 cups of flour
    • 6 hard boiled eggs, colored if desired
    • 1 egg beaten well combined with 1 teaspoon of water or milk
    • Colored sprinkles
    Preparation
Combine yeast, lukewarm water and the additional 1 teaspoon of sugar in a bowl. Let mixture sit for 10 minutes. Combine in a large bowl, scalded milk, salt and butter. Beat the 2 eggs slightly and add to the liquid mixture along with 1/2 cup of sugar. Add half of the flour to the milk mixture and beat until smooth. Pour in the yeast mixture. Add remainder of the flour to form a stiff dough. Place dough on a floured board and knead until smooth. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover and let rise in a draft free warm location until doubled in size. Punch dough down and roll onto floured board, dividing into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 1 inch thick rope then shape rope into a 'U' shape. Put 1 of the colored eggs in the middle of the 'U' shape. Twist the rope to form a tail at the bottom. Brush each of the dough babies with the beaten egg mixture. Sprinkle with candy sprinkles if desired. Place on a greased baking sheet, cover and let rise until double in size. Bake at 350 degrees until brown - around 35 minutes. Cool on rack for 10 minutes.
    Optional
    • Brush with powdered sugar glaze made of powdered sugar, milk and vanilla or lemon extract.
    • Eggs do not need to be cooked, but I hard boil and color my eggs before putting them in the dough babies.
