Cascata delle Marmore (Marmore's Falls)
History of the FallsDuring Roman times the Velino river created an area of stagnant and swampy water that became unhealthy causing illnesses. The consul Manius Curius Dentatus took on a massive project to help drain the river by creating a canal that would travel over the Marmore cliff into the Nera river below. Over the centuries new canals were created to relieve some of the issues that were threatening the town of Terni. The main threat was when the Velino river was in flood stage it would divert that water down the falls into the Nera river, which flowed towards the town of Terni. The construction of the canals did not resolve the problem entirely. In 1787 architect Andrea Vici made major modifications to the falls, which helped with the waterflow, giving us the modern day look.
In the late 19th century steel mills were built in Terni and they used the water flow to power the mills. In the 20th century engineers began to harness the power of the water and constructed a hydroelectric power plant to create electricity for the area.
