  • Cascata delle Marmore (Marmore's Falls)
Part 2 of 3 - Visiting the Falls
    Continued from part 1

    by Anthony Parente

    Visiting the Falls

Before you go to visit the falls you are going to want to take a look at the schedule telling you when the falls will be operational. During the day the water is diverted to the hydroelectric power plant and only a very small amount cascades over the cliff. Ideally you want to be there when the siren goes off so you can witness the full effect of the water thundering over the cliff into the Nera river below. As this occurs water vapors rise from the valley below almost forming a hazy cloud. When the sun passes through this it creates a beautiful rainbow that is worth viewing. Parking is available at the bottom or top of the falls. You will need a ticket to enter the area and enjoy the various trails, balconies and of course the stunning views. Plan to spend 3-5 hours at the falls if you intend to visit the Lower Outlook, Upper Outlook and all the trails. If you visit the Lover's Balcony situated on trail n.1 during the time the falls are operational you will get wet. Odds are you will get wet no matter where you are when the falls are fully operational. Just keep that in mind so you can protect your belongings.

    Guided Tours

You can enjoy the falls on your own without the help of a guide. They do offer a number of themed tours that focus on various aspects of the falls. Children can enjoy the "Enchanted Walk" with the elf Gnefro. You can enjoy a guided cave tour in the "Grotta della condotta." These are just some of the tours you can book. To find out more about the different guided tours you can visit the Guided Tour section of the Marmore Falls website.

    River Sports

As the falls empty into the Nera river it creates an excellent atmosphere for those who enjoy rafting, canoeing, riverboarding (hydrospeed) and canyoning. The beauty of it is that this is something the whole family can do. There are different degrees of difficulty so the more experienced can take advantage of them. If you are looking for more information on these sports Rafting Marmore is a great starting point to help answer any questions you may have.
